A single bad dental visit can cause a lifetime of dental fear and anxiety. Sedation dentistry can help alleviate the fear and anxiety for many and help them get the care they need. Working with many anxious dental patients in our practice, we have realized that a positive dental experience can heal fear and instill trust.
We use oral sedation for an array of services to make your experience extremely comfortable. Dr. Patel may give you nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, which relaxes you without impairing your consciousness of what’s going on around you. The Austin sedation dentist may also use a one of the many medications available to sedate you. With these medications, you will be extremely relaxed, but you will be awake and aware of what is going on around you. Sedation dentistry does not put the patient to sleep. Some the most commonly used drugs to sedate dental patients are triazolam, diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan) zaleplon (Sonata) and hydroxyzine (Vistaril).
Your Treatment Day
When you schedule your visit at any of our two Austin Texas dental office, Dr. Patel will give you a prescription for sedation medication to take an hour before your appointment. After a friend or family member drives you to our office, the doctor will make sure you are at an ideal sedation level before beginning treatment. During your services, you will be calm and relaxed, but able to respond to any cues.
The medication takes a few hours to wear off, so you will also need a ride home. After you are back to a normal state, you should have little or no memory of the experience.
Future Dental Appointments
Many guests gain confidence after their first sedation dentistry appointment. You may also discover that your anxiety and fear has been greatly relieved and be able to forego the sedation during future visits. However, depending on your anxiety level, you may also choose to use oral sedation for all future appointments or for only procedures that call for multiple appointments or are more invasive.
